What solder rework tools do you have? What works best?

Hi Folks,

I have just started a repair service for a consumer product and am looking for a solder rework station that might speed up repairs.Right now it is desoldering braid, cut ic leads from the ic body and remove each pin and clean out the pin holes.
I would like some feedback from you as what you use.I was thinking about a hot air type system for DIP work and could use some feedback if any of you have used this type of system or what work best for you?

Thanks for your feedback,

CNM

I like to use a normal soldering gun and a can of canned air. I liquefy the solder with the gun then blast it through the hole with the canned air. The little tube they give you with the can works very well for precision aiming.

Safety something blah blah blah disclaimer.

Try a DIP desoldering block tip for your iron, it will probably require a 60W iron or larger but will desolder all legs at once and you can remove the DIP IC with an IC extractor. This will be many times faster than snipping the legs!

All good ideas. One will not work for all repairs, some boards have vertical boards that have limited access and I don't know how the hot air will work on DIP devices with other parts nearby.

Thanks for your input,

CNM

I purchased this one: Circuit Specialists Inc. - BlackJack SolderWerks Hot Air System w Soldering Iron & Mechanical Arm (BK5000) Although I have limited experience with it. De-soldering/soldering/re-work is always a real pain.

Adapters are used for each package.

One of the better ways to remove DIPs is to heat all the leads at one with a way to pull on it at the same time.

Desoldering each individual pins first. Add solder, solder and desolder again specific pins sometimes also helps.

It's all about adapters and access. It was reccomended with DIPs at one time to cut all of the pins and remove one by one.
