There's my (probably quite skewed) viewpoint; being a college kid and all... :D[/QUOTE said:At least you choose to have one. (Now elections come use it)
Papabravo said:I believe it devalues the accomplishments of it beneficiaries. How much is a BSEE, or an MSEE, or even a PhD worth if you suspect it was the result of affirmative action. I refuse to split those hairs, I'll just hire the white guy and be done with it. Before you start flaming I should like to point out that I am the owner of a small privately held business, and in 16 years the problem has never come up. There have been no minority engineers or technicians who have ever applied for a job. It is also true that we have never had the need to go recruiting in places where minority engineers and technicians live and work.
As a side note when I went back to school for a second MSE in 2001-2004 as a middle aged white guy I was surrounded by Asians. There were no young white guys, and no African-Americans, young or old. A great number of the Asians were women. Those women are consuming graduate school education like there was no tomorrow, while their husbands and significant others worked on their PhDs. They all paid out of state tuition, which I'm sure just broke the University of Michigan's teeny tiny heart. Some were supported by their governments in return for some period of indentured servitude, but quit a few had family money. None of them served as TA's or had any financial aid. These women were some of the smatest project partners I've ever had, and I was in high demand because I could write up the results. Cooperate to graduate!
Hire one of them? In a Michigan minute.
quixotron said:But, i do think its right to help balance the power, to a certain degree of course. you cant put a minority in for a position if he's not qualified. but, suppose a black and white guy apply for a job, and the white guy is slightly just slightly more qualified, I would hire the black man. the white guy has too many unfair advantages in the past and even up until now. something has to offset that in order to restore control and balance.

Assuming that the mistreatment of previous generations isn't holding back the current generation on any level. Either way, exceedingly difficult to gauge.phalanx said:Quod erat demonstrandum
Qualifications, ability to learn, and good rapport with others are what I look for.
The concept of preferential treatment for current generations as reparations for the mistreatment of previous generations is ludicrous.
ronsimpson said:For 4 years I worked for a company that took some government money. There for 1/13 employs had to be “black”. We stayed at 12 employs. Could not find a qualified minority and the boss said he was unwilling to hire a minority to ‘stay at home’. Affirmative Action in action.
quixotron said:that was stupid and a clear confirmation of his racist policies. the result, you guys lost out on government money because you dont want a black guy in your "club house."
phalanx said:Not hiring a (pick your minority) employee because they are not qualified for the position is a racist policy? You aren't the sharpest tack are you?
quixotron said:i sincerely doubt that they couldnt find any minority that is qualified. they either werent looking or didnt care.
yeah it never occured to him, that they could train the poor guy and still get the funding. both sides would win. most jobs require on the job training anyways.
and what the hell does "stay at home" supposed to mean? i hope its not what i think it is. they are perpetuating a hate crime, the crime is denial of employment and the disguise is: oh no qualification-therefore no job, no training and NO DAMN CHANCE, you colored @#$%^&*!
Thats what he really means!
