Probably the most common application is the variant, delta-sigma modulation used in high resolution A/D and D/A converters.

Is there a credible source that talks about this other than wikipedia? I can't seem to find it even on google.

It was used by several PBX manufacturers before PCM became the standard. Its positive was the ability to encode any voltage and its negative was its limited dynamic range. A fast changing input could out run the thing. In telephone systems that have a 3.5k bandwidth limit, that was not really an issue.
