Voltage controlled switch

I have a home made arcade joystick, and I was wondering if it would be possible to "remote control" it using a computer with a parallel port.

The buttons on the joystick are basically microswitches that close the circuit when I press a button. Would it be possible to replace a microswitch with a hypothetical switch that can open/close based on externally applied voltage instead of physical force?

Could I program/control such as switch from my computer using the voltage outputs from parallel port?

(If anyone wonders why I want to do this, it's mostly something I've wondered if could be done, but it could also use it to measure the input latency, and maybe even make a new joystick with macros in the future.)

EDIT: Looks like there are kits using solid state relays for exactly this purpose: **broken link removed**.
