variable temperature circuit trouble

I have a nichrome heating element that is running on a 5vDC 15A signal, and i want to be able to adjust the temperature of the heating element. How could i do this using a 2N3055 power transistor? Is there a better way to go about doing this?
 
A MOSFET and PWM is a better solution. If you want a simple manual power control, use a 555 wired for variable duty cycle (PWM). Some examples:
