variable speed switch question

I have a Delta 37-190 (6 inch jointer). It is pretty much the same as a Delta JT-160. **broken link removed**

The variable speed switch went out. A replacement switch is $129. A new jointer is $239.

Can I disconnect the variable speed controller on the Delta Jointer and wire it direct to bipass the variable speed controller and then plug the jointer into the variable speed controller from Harbor Freight. I do not care if the RPM is the same as the original factory settings, I just want to control down the speed of the jointer so that it isn't going full speed.

Correction: The model number of the jointer I have is 37-070 and not the 37-190. The 37-070 has a 10 amp motor.

Sounds reasonable, as long as you don't have a soft or slow-start motor.

Should I disconnect the current variable speed switch or just plug it in and let er buck?

I would remove the old, busted controller.
