Does a transformer convert 240VAC to any particular voltage, for example i want to convwert 240VAC to 30VDC (at 1 amp) but im not sure how a transfomer works or if you need a bridge rectifier etc

can anyone help?

A transformer converts AC to AC. To get DC out of it, you need a rectifier of some sort. A bridge rectifier is most common in this case.

Transformers are wound for a specific voltage multiple/divisor. That is, one side of the transformer takes 230VAC and the output is 30VAC. You could also put it in reverse and put 30VAC in and get 230VAC out.

They come in almost any voltage-voltage ratio you can think of, and finding 230VAC to 30VAC shouldn't be hard at all.

Yes and Yes. There are standard transformers which you can purchase premade. Certain voltages like 12V, 15V, 24V, etc are readily available. Some transformers have tapped primaries/secondaries so you strap to get something closer to your requirements. You can have transformers custom made, but the minimum quantities are huge...

Look around at DigiKey or a similar supplier to see what is available.

would any of these be able to output 24v around .5 tp 1a?

Only the 12VA ones would marginally meet your requirements. To get VA, you multiply the secondary voltage rating by the secondary current rating. (VA is similar to Watts, but doesn't consider phase angle between the current and voltage). 24V @ 1A would require a 24 VA or higher rating.
