How do you test the emittor base collector.using a digital multi meter.

"All About Electronics" has a bit on sem-conductors which shows you how to test NPN\PNP based transistor and its junctions i believe

Put the digital meter in the diode check mode. Connect the + lead to the base and the - lead on the emitter for NPN transistors, the reverse for PNP transistors. A reading of approximately 600 the junction is good. Near 0 and the junction is shorted.

Some tester have that function built in. Mine does.
