Switching devices for Variable Speed Drive design?

I am looking to choose a set of switching devices to control a 40V AC induction motor. I know the different choices, but I'm not sure which device to go with? I presume you choose based on its characteristics and how suitable it is for the motor. Does anyone have any info or links to considerations for choosing the power switching device based on the motor being used?
