Lets say you have a load in a circuit that draws 30 amps. If you put a 5 amp rated switch in the circuit as well, will the switch be overloaded, or will the circuit only have 5 amps running through it?
The switch will be overloaded. The switch rating is just the maximum amps that you can safely put through the switch without reducing its switching life. Switching more than the rated current will rapidly pit the contacts and wear them out.
the 5 amps switch does not mean only 5 amps current will flow trough it. I have experienced it in AC circuits, the problem is that the high correct load will inpose an over load on the switch and thereby increasing the temperature of the switch. this will lead to burning or melting of the switch.
