speed control without using potentiometer

hi all
im a newbie,
i have a question is there anyway to control speed of a dc motor with out using a potentiometer to change the voltage?i will be using avr.can you guys tell some ways to do this?

i read it.but i want to control speed from computer and it will be wireless.(like when i press one button the speed will be increasing and other button decreasing).is this possible?

Yes.
PWM for speed.
Modem or radio for wireless see **broken link removed**
for some wireless approaches.
