Sharp XL 3000 - Read Error

I have a rather smart Sharp XL-3000 cd player/tuner that has just started displaying "Read Err" when trying to play a CD.

I haven't been able to source a workshop manual for it and wondered if anyone else had seen/heard of this and knew the cause, and whether it's terminal?

It's a nice piece of kit and I'd really hate to have to junk it.

It's usually the laser assembly, and Sharp use different ones to the standard Sony devices, more expensive and more difficult to source.
