One option:

1) design a sequential logic circuit that will produce the desired sequence of onn/ off signals you need.

2) use transistors to drive the lamps.

The web has many examples of sequential circuits.. look for examples like counters, modulo-n dividers etc...

I've been asked about these also. Sequencing the lights is easy, the part I'm having trouble with is how does the sequencer know when someone has their foot on the brakes. The brake lights and turn signals both use the same element of the bulb (secoond element is tail light) and the signal comes down the same wire. The only way I could think of making it work is by using a delay with a missing pulse detector, making it dangerous since the brake lights wouldn't come on instantly. The original (68 Cougar) sequencer had a totally different wiring harness that isolated brake/turn signal and had a motor driven cam switch.

You need to run separate wires for the brakes and turn signals. Just get rid of the flasher. You could build a serial bus or an analog comparator to drive multiple signals on one wire. For example, make it provide 12v if it's a brake and 6v if it's a turn signal (but this would require that the sequencer have its own 12v power wire).
