There is a lot of readily available information online. I Googled.. RS232 Communication Simple Example

The RS232 protocol isnt too hard to understand once you see an example of a set of pulses being transmitted. One thing is often overlook though, and that is the accuracy with which the pulses are to be sent. There a specification somewhere i think is 1 percent on the timing. Someone may want to look this up.
