I like the idea of using a RCM3700 for RS485 to Ethernet control. It's 5V and lots of I/O. It looks alot eaiser than building a PIC to ethernet solution.

I worked with those this and they are great.
they are easy to program and no extra electronics needed for communication with a PC. As far as I know microchip has a new controller out wich should be able to to work with a ethernet connection but they are very rearly.
