just a random thought...suppoes one were to remove the rectifier from a wall wart...would there be any detrimental effects or would that simply turn dc into ac? I'm on vacation, and thinking of all kinds of things...

If it has filter caps and you remove and bypass the rectifier(s) the filter caps looking to filter DC would likely become unhappy. :(

Think about vacation while on vacation, it makes for a much more enjoyable vacation.

If you wanted to use the wall wart for its original application, then yes it would be detrimental.

or would that simply turn dc into ac?
Yes the output of the wall wart would now be AC.
But, as well as removing the rectifier, you must also remove the smoothing capacitor (if fitted).
Otherwise the cap may go bang.

Yup, as the guys said, it would be very detrimental if you tried using it to power the original device it was made for. AC in a DC circuit is almost guaranteed to let all the magic smoke out ;)

It wouldn't exactly be "turning DC to AC". It would be removing the part that made it DC in the first place, so it would just be AC all along.

Most smoothing caps in wall warts are electrolytic, which are often polarized. If you tried putting AC through it, it would very likely explode.

Hmm, for some strange reason, Darwin awards come to mind.

or a Wile E. Coyote award....

one of the criteria for the Wile E. Coyote (Super Genius) award is a circuit (or circuit modification) guaranteed to let the magic smoke out....
