proximity sensor / car wing mirror / how?

Maybe a laser range finder type sensor? https://www.google.com/search?q=laser+range+finder+sensors&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 They do use them in robotics too.

How about a hb100 radar sensor, small enough to go in a mirror.
Heres an instructable done by someone who's sussed the protocol used by bosch ultrasound parking sensors, not much use at the range you want, but interesting.
