We call them Wake up strips here.
Never been in the ditch though.
One of the things I miss from the UK is 'Cats Eyes' along the centre of the road.

We have 'rumble strips' on motorways at the side of the road or 'hard shoulder', but nowhere else I can think of.
Another way to generate vibration is a motor with an offset weight, a few items use this idea including ladies certain personal items.
