The answer depends on how much you already know, do you know what is microprocessor? Do you know what gate/flip-flops, register, encoder/decoder is? Tell us something more about your understanding of Digital Electronics.
There is a website www.bastoc.com that has a free BASIC compiler and tutorials on ATMEL AVRs. I use PIC and AVR. Mostly AVR now do to the cost and fit.
