Plant Watering And Monitoring System

Hi,
I am trying to design a plant watering and monitoring system. But am stuck. I do not no where to start! I needs to have a simple LED display showing water level as it will have a built in water tank. I need the system to water the plant when the plant becomes to dry. I will use it for a large inddor plant. Please Help!!!

There are a number of methods of doing this. I think having a series of moisture detectors linked up to a pic board should work. As for the output a simple electronic valve should work. This too could be linked up to the pic. If you need any furthur help i will try to get the info as a friend is making one at the moment.
