Obsolete Scanner - A Veritable Toy Box!

So, my ancient Visioneer flatbed scanner no longer communicates with my OS, and the manufacturer no longer supports the model. While fooling around on the web, I've discovered there are lots of neat toys to recover from a scanner. Super bright gas-discharge lamp, steppers. etc. Has anyone made anything interesting from one of these monsters?
