MOSFET Protection

The Avago gate driver I am looking at offers what they call IGBT desaturation protection. My understanding is that as the Vce increases beyond a threshold the Avago will shut off the IGBT. I assume that this will also protect a MOSFET from an overcurrent condition?
 
It should as long as a rapid shutoff of the load doesn't generate a damaging voltage spike from any load inductance.
