Looking for PCB based solenoid design mentioned in NASA Tech Briefs around 2000-06. A company published a description of an arbitrarily sized solenoid design comprised of a stack of printed circuit board rings rather than a winding wire. This allows solenoid construction to build vertically from a substrate or surface rather than in the plane. Is this a commonplace device in microelectronics now?
A US inventor has been awarded a patent recently wherein claims detail the construction of a mechanical motor constructed by such means. The solenoid in the patent's preferred embodiments causes a longitudinal magnet to oscillate so that the assembly forms a vibrational source. The patent claims the design and process of a public domain technology.
Not something I have experience of however I've heard of a similar thing for Smps's, the transformer windings being implemented by Pcb tracks, maybe thats where the idea came from.
