Interesting choice for a "school project" with your son. No expense spared there.
That's an $800 receiver in working condition and units have sold "for parts only" on eBay for over $300.

Why such a special unit for a "school project". If you need to identical receivers, you may want to sell the one you have and buy two new ones.

As an ex-service engineer I would avoid AV amplifiers - they are a nightmare to work on, as they are very complicated, and usually have multiple stacked boards which are impossible to work on. Even if you could purchase the required service extension leads they would be VERY, VERY expensive.

It's not something I would suggest for a school project.

Unless you are familiar with Denon and know what you are doing, that is definitely NOT something you want to get involved with--so much as a "school Project"?
Service manual for that unit is well over 200 pages plus you'd need special jigs and programming...
It has to be disassemble/assemble in a certain way with different size screws to boot.
Pretty much a NIGHTMARE.

I doubt it is for a school project. It's a thing on Craigslist and other forums to ask for specific donations for a made-up cause were the requested piece is worth way more than the giver expects. This feels like one of those - reason is ok for a donation (school project) and the background (i.e. need a second one to match the one we already have) to make it sound like, "hey, I already donated my worthless unit, you should donate your 'worthless' Denon AVR-X4500H if you have one".
