Linear inverter?

Hi all,

I have been researching about inverters and came across the term linear inverter. I have been told this are the old systems and they are no longer manufactured in the west. Are they referring to the old motor generator sets?

hi,
Linear Invertors are still made.

Basically is a DC to AC convertor with a Sinewave output rather than a chopped squarwave.

Don't they operate a lot like an audio amp, using the transistors in the linear range? Would produce a great sine wave, but also dissipate a LOT of heat.

No, they use a class D output stage which is more efficient.
