Hi there
Great website. I am building a prop which has some fake led vu meters (only 6 LEDs). We would like the leds "meters" rise and fall in a random and varying way. There are about ten pairs of "meters" and we would to keep it as simple as possible if we can (ie: no microprocessor) with a separate circuit board for each pair. We were thinking about a sawtooth generator/pseudorandom voltage generator driving an LM3914. Each led pair should look different and vary somewhat. Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Thank you very much. We will be looking it over but it is definitely the right idea. Diolch (hope I got that right).

You did . The circuit uses two oscillators with periods which aren't in a simple harmonic relationship, so their ANDed output should seem ~random. Try tinkering with their time constants to 'tune' the result to your liking.
