LCD - HD44780 problem

I Will be using the Read function on my LCD (R/W = 1) but am unsure at what point the Data Lines (D0 - D7) go from being an input to an output.
This is an issue because I will be using the Data lines for I/O elsewhere on my circuit and don't want them to be Outputs at the same time for obvious reasons.
Is it at any time R/W = 1 or does E have to = 1 also?
