information on Ultrasonic needed!

Hi, I would lke to know how I need to place an ultrasonic ranger so my autonomous vehicle knows If theres an object in front of him. Can i get more information than just the range eg if the obstacle is on the right or left? whats the detection area of this sensor ? Any information is welcome
