I couldn't agree more... There are some less than obvious subtleties to overcome... First, you need to make your PWM step size or duration as short as possible. It's amazing how much light you get from an LED even when only lighted for 1 microsecond in a 1280 microsecond period (duty cycle = 1/1280th or 0.078125%). For example, the LEDs in the left column in that first video are lighted for 1 microsecond at the top to 10 microseconds at the bottom during each 1280 microsecond period, but since duty cycle and perceived brightness are not directly proportional, those first ten duty cycle values actually represent the first ~25% of perceived (gamma corrected) total brightness.
