i am trying to make a counter from 74160 ic.can anyone tell me how to give pulse to the ic using some kind of push buton switch.

There isn't much to getting the 74160 to count. Just apply a high input to the clock pin, and the chip will do the rest.

However, there is a slight problem with a phenomena known as switch bounce that may cause some difficulty. In any mechanical button or switch, their action causes a tremendous chatter as the contacts bounce against each other. This is not too bad for your bathroom light switch, but for a 74160 or other chip operating in 1000ths of a second time frames, its murder.

So your first procedure is to resarch switch debounce, starting with Google, for example. The internet is full of tutorials, including some linked here, that can help you solve this problem.

Good luck.
