How to make 4029 counter IC stop counting??

We r making a random number generator. The timer ic makes the 4029 counter 'count'. But when we remove the clock input from the 4029 ic it is still counting. Can anyone tell us a method to make the counter stop and display the last number it counted?

Can you please post the circuit you are using? If the clock signal is removed I don't see how the counter can continue to up or down count sans clock? Also:

The counter is advanced one count at
the positive-going edge of the clock if the carry in and preset
enable inputs are at logical ``0''. Advancement is inhibited
when either or both of these two inputs is at logical ``1''.

So placing a logic high at either of those inputs will inhibit the count and should stop the count at the last count.

If you flat out removed the clock (as in cut the wire); it may be counting noise. I would suggest a pull down (or up) to ensure a stable signal. Or try what Ron said.
