Hi I would like to use the L293 as a driver for stepper motor that draws 5Amps. since the max output of the L293 is 1A (600ma on the L293D), I hope that there is a way to increase its current by adding transistors/fet. if you know anything about it - please let me know.
Thanx.

While you could probably buffer the L293 to get more current, but I think it would probably be better to use a gate driver to drive the mosfets. To be similar to the L293, you need both high-side and low-side drivers. There are a number of parts out there, but here are a few to start with.

Look at the FAN7842 and FAN7888 from https://www.fairchildsemi.com or the UCC27211 from https://www.ti.com

Please note: Mosfet drivers have amp ratings. This is the pulse current that they can drive the mosfet gates with, and affects how fast the mosfets turn on and off. This amp rating is not directly related to the capacity of the mosfets.
