help for my project 18F4620 and ENC28J60!

Hi i'll explain you my project,

Im doing a security system with a PIC 18F4620 and the ENC28J60. Bassicaly what it is doing, its that there is a sensor that detect if a temperature is reached. If the temperature is reached I just want to send an email to someone using the ENC28J60 via ethernet.

My hardware is done and Im pretty sure it's ok.. where I have problems is with the software!
I have trouble understanding how the TCP/IP stack and the SMTP email-send is working. Do I need a server to send my email?
Could someone help me please?

Yes, you need to use an SMTP server to send your mail, it is however extremely simple. I've telenet'd to SMTP servers and sent mail without a client before.
