I use the JML heatproof oven gloves for heavy duty heat protection.. They will withstand upto 350 degrees C for 15 seconds.. And I occasionally take them higher when disassembling plumbing pipework..
There are plenty on ebay!!
For my normal soldering, I just rely on holding the iron correctly. I can even do 805 SMD's with no probs!!!!
Just one tip for ANY heatproof protective items... DO NOT GET THEM WET...
Water will turn to steam amazingly quickly, and the burns are fekkin painful..
