TCM-200DV no output surface mount soldering

The ribbon type cables seem to be soldered in, no connectors and I have one with 9 leads that is not connected to the board any longer. I cant seem to solder it (I dont have surface mount kit) so I was wondering if I can use some copper track sticky backed. Does anyone have a method please ? Thanks

Well I had two not working, one belongs to my neighbour and the other I bought for about £20 broken. So thankfully the one I bought was just the belt so that is working (hurray). How lucky is that? The second one I am stuck with trying to resolder some tiny wires. Someone suggested I wrap some wire around the solder tip (mains wire) of the iron and that does give me a finer point and I can get one wire to solder but so far not all seven at the same time. So still work in progress. Photos later

There is a service manual available here:

I can see positions for a seven way cable between the main board and a sub board, I'm guessing that is what you means?

It does not look like the solder pads are particularly small, so any normal electronics iron should be OK.
Clean all the pads, and the wire ends, thoroughly before trying to join anything.

Then tin them all using flux-cored solder. If you cannot get solder to flow properly on every part, you have no chance of getting good joints.

Only ty and make the connections once all points are tinned. They should then flow together with the iron and possibly just a small amount of extra solder.

(Photos would be very helpful).

Hi Thanks; I cant tin the wires maybe I should get some solder with more flux in it to try that The wires are multi-core and very fine so the solder does not stick: You can maybe see not the best focus; but the line of solder points with numbers looking a bit burnt and the wires the colours of the rainbow Thanks And some wires very short as I have tried stripping them and broken them and if I could tin them that would make a difference

You MUST tin the wires, if you can't tin them, then you can't solder them.

Are you using lead free solder? - but even that, while not as good as leaded solder, should still be flux cored.

Presumably you do know how to solder?, apply the iron to the joint (or wire) then apply the solder to it - you must not use the soldering iron as a spoon, as the solder then just evaporates before it gets to the joint.

Hi Yes I can solder - I wish it would 'stick' I'll.try cleaning the wires with isopropyl alcohol. I have two sorts of solder one lead free one not. The flux just burns off and it does not hold - I found - I will try some more. I cant get on with it right now but will order some ribbon cable.

Yes the difficulty is it won't tin

What type of wire is it?, can you tell? - if it's highly flexible (like headphone cables) then it's probably mostly 'cloth' with insulated copper impregnated in it. This makes it very difficult to tin and solder - although (as I have to fit different plugs on headphones on a frequent basis) I found that turning the soldering iron as hot as it will go melts through the insulation and allows tinning.

Yes that's a good idea. Also once I have a stand to hold the wire carefully it could be easier too . I think it is 7wires (maybe one was removed) and is approx 4mm across the 7 of them flat. The one you linked to - I dont know how to read that, is it 27mm wide ? No it says wire diameter 1mm that sounds right and L*W is presumably Length*Width so width is 0.4cm which is the same ? Is 1.27mm the thickness then if each wire is 1mm diameter ? I will try to order it. Thanks again. Just waiting now until the ribbon cable arrives

Hi yes I have that ribbon cable now but I see it is 1.27mm across all insulated wires and the one I have is just 0.4mm across them all that is it is about 1/3 of the width. That said I could see if the whole thing could be changed for the wider one. Then I could tin the ends I guess
