It seems the anti-flu tablet should be taken within 48 hours of infection else surely death!

And... The CDC stop giving weekly updates on confirmed cases and deaths a couple of weeks ago. Last count was 31 deaths in Florida, over 3,000 confirmed cases. There were 43,771 cases, and 302 deaths nation wide. This was July 24th totals. School starts in a couple of weeks, and Labor Day weekend should be a good virus spreader too. Since there is still no vaccine, and treatment isn't very effective, looks like a very rough couple months, then of course the regular flu season starts... Maybe Obama's heath care reform will be up and running soon, and he'll start passing out the magic cure-all pills, free of charge.

Anybody ever read, 'The Stand', by Stephen King, or watch the movie? Got a hunch we'll be seeing some of that panic and hysteria soon. Will definitely stock up on the vitamins and basic cold/flu meds this week, just in case there is a huge demand in a few weeks.

So far, there have been 7511 hospitalizations in the US with 477 deaths attributed to influenza. Most cases of hospitalization for "influenza," regardless of year, are not tested specifically for influenza. The diagnosis must be considered only presumptive. Based on current data, mortality for hospitalized cases was 6.4% in the USA. Overall mortality for all cases (hospitalized and not) is estimated at around 1%.

H1N1 influenza is a serious disease. It is nowhere nearly 100% fatal, even when untreated (excepting the first month in Mexico for unknown reasons). You should be immunized, if you are in a high-risk group. Antiviral treatment is somewhat controversial based on a recent report in the British Medical Journal, but it is still recommended in the USA.

This is NOT a panic situation.

I just did a little spin on the numbers to show how easy it is to make things seem really bad even though it actually normal day to day reality.
However It does put the scaremongering numbers relating to viruses and disease in perspective.

The was that this virus is a killer, and seems to be doing just fine, in less than ideal conditions. Age and physical condition doesn't seem to be a factor. In a couple of weeks, when the schools re-open, the open a great place to spread. Kids are a little sloppy, some are just plain disgusting, all packed in a small room, of about 30 students. Single mom can't afford to take the day off, every time one of the kids catches a cold. I'm not particularly concerned about catching this thing myself, rarely catch a cold, but it'll be more challenging this year. I won't be getting vaccinated either, since there is no guarantee it will be effective, and it can still produce many of the same symptoms, even death.

Guess it's funny, up until some one you know is lying in a hospital bed. Here's the latest victim, last night, 19 year old girl...

Yea but Cubans, and most 3rd world nations people, get regular exercise and eat better. Statistically we have far more fat lazy pigs per capita than the rest of the world.
Thats what brings down the average number.

Realisticaly most people in my famlity easily make it to 85 and often up to near 100 befor they die.

Here in Australia we have had a few deaths of healthy people with no preexisting conditions. However, these cases are very rare, most of the deaths have been of people with preexisting conditions.

I am not a doctor but the girl who died from complications from the swine flu went to the hospital because of pneumonia, not flu. Maybe she caught another illness in the hospital.

Did you bother to look at the beautiful graphic I posted from the CDC? It's labeled "Pneumonia and Influenza." What do you think the main cause of death is in people who die of "influenza?"

Also, it is not the old and weak who are dying from H1N1, it is the healthy teenagers to adults who are. That similarity to the 1918 flu is one reason there is such great concern. Fortunately, the mortality from this strain is not that high, but the virus certainly will mutate and no one knows what the mutation will be like. ALL influenza A viruses are like that.

There are many symptoms of the flu. If you have the symptoms plus the other chronic medical conditions like asthma, diabetes or obesity or are an infant or are elderly then delaying medical treatment might end your life.

Peoples with less immunity like children and elders are easily caught by the virus. And those living outside township/cities doesn't have to worry much. I think next mutations of these viruses will kill the humanity totally so no need to wait until 3rd world war.

A few doctors and some innocent people came for hospital check up went home with H1N1 bagged!

I understand 'short cuts' are being taken in the approval of this swine flu vaccine.

The intention is to vaccinate babies as the first step of vaccinating the general population of the UK.

We are also getting mixed information from the 'specialists' on the safety and use of the Tamiflu antiviral.!

Its ONLY the elderly with existing medical problems that are at the greatest risk,
'wrinklies' are more likely to just shrug it off as they have been exposed to so many flu bugs.

Hi Eric,
The Tamiflu antiviral only helps in freezing the viruses from multiplication/spreading up so it blocks leading to more dangerous levels. They have some serious side effects but depends on people.
