getting twoo outputs from one.

i have an electronic kit with all the basic supplies. i have been playing with a 38kHz ir reciever and notice there are pulses for different buttons. its there a way to make a reciever for this. it doesn't need to be for ir remote but i am curious about how they seperate it and would like to use this in some projects. i have made a seperator by voltage by the voltage using the comparator i believe was 324. i have an ic 324,546,4011,4001,4029,4511,4027 and each of them does something different.
