i know the basic theory behind electromagnets, but i was wondering if there was any way to relate strength of magnetic field created to the current put throught the coil of wire. like if i wanted a field to hold up a 10 lb weight, how much current would have to go through the wire? i know there are many variables but is there an equation or 5 that i have to use to figure this out? thanks to all who respond or read.
The general answer is yes but it would seem that the formula would be specific to the magnet design. For years they've made electromagnets to hold parts down for machining or to lift things via hoist. You might look for info from manufacturers of that equipment. "Magnetic chuck" might be one key word combo or "material handling electromagnet" may help.
