normally when we use pic24 or pic16 series we save the file as .asm

but now i am using dspic30f6014 mcu(sample code from microchip) and save the file as.asm i couldnt create the source file why?
 
after searching so many threads i found the solution ,to save the file as .s (example- led.s) now its working

pls any one explain what is the diff bet .asm and .s file?( its not clear in google search)
