I don't use ZIF as the programming pin for different series of the microcontroller are different. Also I prefer ICSP
But they are really cheap.

Check out the P16PRO40 which addresses that 'problem'.

Well that's only for PIC16 (that's why named P16PRO40 ). Some PIC18 has slightly different pinout and the socket for 8-bit PIC is not suitable for 16-bit PIC.

Many 18F devices are supported by the P16PRO40 as well, I've only used a few, but all those were.
