black box guessing

if a black box was given,with two wire pull out from the box.no other additional info was given,then how will you determine the impedance in the circuit?what is the resistance?if given that is a passive circuit,what will the circuit look like?
seem the task quite challenging.
 
What other equipment are you allowed to use - power supply, multimeter etc ?
 
Apply an alternating voltage, measure the resulting current and phase angle, Θ then apply:

Z = R + jX; tan Θ = X/R; |Z| = √(R² + X²)

Hope I got those right. Pulling out 20 year old memories.
