Arduino ethernet shield with Enc28J60 chip

I have one of these.
I noticed that there is just the IC on the board with no line drivers or other 'stuff' interfacing the ethernet chip to the Rj45 socket.
Will the chip drive long lines, the spec is something silly like 300 meters, I want to go 60 meters.
I guess a simple work round would be to chuck a 4 port switch between the ethernet shield & the line.
 
There is a really easy way to answer the question and a difficult one. The easy one way is, "Just Do It".
