Anyone playing with LED Cubes?

I have done some thinking about that in the past. I have ony used 805 SMD LEDs. There seem to be a few varieties out there. Maybe some emit light in more directions then the 805s do.

I suppose on could wire them with wire warp wire. In the end I do not see it being easier.

Most of the kids in my class never soldered and they caught on rapidly. After making all his layers one student discarded his first one and made a replacement. Soldering lead to lead is a good intro for people who have never handled a iron. Next week we will be doing through hole soldering using IC donated by Erick. :) (Yup it took a while to get there)

We have a few 3x3 cubes, several 3x(>3)'s and one 4x4 in the works.

@weym0
BASCOM (had to look it up) is a structured basic. If you know a bit of C++ you should catch on fast enough. Prior to working with the cube you need to make a simple thing work like blink a single LED.

Then we need to see schematics.

This is school work and we will not write the code for you but we can help you with it.

I always thought of making one of these. I've scrounged up enough yellow LEDs to make up a 3x3 cube and I'll give it a try.

Saw **broken link removed** Friday and I was hooked immediately. The big complex RGB ones are very very cool! :D I didn't have any RGB LEDs, so I built a little 3x3 cube with some cheap Stanley LEDs I had kickin around.

I was looking at this a while ago and found this site, might be interesting for you.

Bump for this old thread. I finally got around to making a little 3x3 cube. I sent off for some boards and threw this one in just for fun. I added an opamp and mic to make it sound activated.

Unfortunately the kids got to it and the LEDs are slightly beat up.

Video of it working.

EDIT: Thanks be80be.
