I have done some thinking about that in the past. I have ony used 805 SMD LEDs. There seem to be a few varieties out there. Maybe some emit light in more directions then the 805s do.
I suppose on could wire them with wire warp wire. In the end I do not see it being easier.
Most of the kids in my class never soldered and they caught on rapidly. After making all his layers one student discarded his first one and made a replacement. Soldering lead to lead is a good intro for people who have never handled a iron. Next week we will be doing through hole soldering using IC donated by Erick.

We have a few 3x3 cubes, several 3x(>3)'s and one 4x4 in the works.

BASCOM (had to look it up) is a structured basic. If you know a bit of C++ you should catch on fast enough. Prior to working with the cube you need to make a simple thing work like blink a single LED.
Then we need to see schematics.
This is school work and we will not write the code for you but we can help you with it.
