how do you reduce the frequency of a quartz crystal vibration for instance in watches, but i bought a watch recently and the manual says that the vibrations are electronically reduced to one impulse per second by solid state circuitry, so how exactly is this done?

The subject was discussed in this thread at one time. Most everyday quartz watches start with a 32,768 Hz. quartz crystal and that frequency is simply divided down to the 1 Hz. pulses or "tics".

A 15 stage digital binary counter will give a 1 Hz output from a 32,768 Hz crystal.
