Hi guys, I want to create a split rail which supplies +/-5V using 2 9V batteries. I am not sure how to go about it. may you please help.

I'm assuming you plan to use the two 9V batteries in series with the center point at ground giving + and - 9V.

If so, then use an LM78L05 for the +5V, and an LM79L05 for the -5V.

A 9V alkaline battery voltage quickly drops to 7V when an ordinary 5V regulator fails to regulate.

You should use low-dropout 5V regulators that work perfectly until the battery voltage drops to 5.5V or less.
