I cant really simulate lcds so i cant tell. If i had the same lcd i would be able to help more. It can be many things. If you have a multimeter most have a option for checking closed circuits. You can check the soldered pins agaisnt the actual lcd pins to test if its a solder issue.
Its getting warm perhaps because you are feeding 9v and it has to dropout about 1v for its own use then 3v more is all heat .. To get to 5v
