Can anybody point me to a schematic for a 12 volt power supply capable of providing up to 3 amps of current.

Here is schematic for 18V / 5A.
If you replace 470 Ohm resistor for 330Ohm
You will get ca 13V.

P-Supply

Use an old computer power supply, there are millions around and they are cheap. You will usually have to throw a resistor on one of the +5v sections to make it function correctly without the computer.

Any idea of the value and the wattage to "trick" the switching power supply there is actually a load attached.

Use an old computer power supply, there are millions around and they are cheap. You will usually have to throw a resistor on one of the +5v sections to make it function correctly without the computer.
