I've come across a great site for PIC project ideas, and here's one I haven't tested yet but should work fine on the Firefly 16F88 Tutor. It's called the Universial Serial Infrared Receiver.
I don't have the MicroElektronika C compiler but the schematic is compatible with Fireflys IR and RS232 port. You'll need to set the DIP switch on Firefly for IR_IN = on and you'll need the serial cable described in the Firefly Assembly Instructions.
Looks like an excellent project for the Firefly!
