Have you tried to Google switch-mode transformer design? Here's an example.
 
Designing a transformer is much more complex than you think. Especially when you get to 500VA and upwards.
 
Maybe it is just an ordinary huge and heavy 50Hz or 60Hz transformer for an old-fashioned square-wave inverter.
